The Perth Hills region lies along a north-south stretch of the Darling Range, Its central point lies almost directly east of Perth. There's a lot to discover and is only a 30 minute drive away from Perth's city.
The Perth Hills region holds wonderful scenery, with its twisty roads through hills and valleys offering the explorer many wonderful driving and wine experiences.
The first vines having been planted in the 1880s. Within this region, you'll need to travel more than most others between wine locations but it sure is worth it.
There are approximately 119 hectares of vineyards. This makes it the second smallest Western Australian wine region, by vineyard area, just over twice that of the Peel region.
Climate & Soil
Perth Hills' warm Mediterranean climate is influenced by the mountainous area known as the Darling Range or Darling Scarp. This results in diverse microclimates, with warm dry summers and cool nights. Altitude is from 10-573 M. Average growing season rainfall is 183 mm and the mean temperature is 24.4 C. Soils range from sandy and gravelly loams to brown clays.
Top Grape Varieties
The region is best known for the pricipal grape varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Shiraz. however, a broad range of other grape varieties are grown with some excellent examples of diverse wine styles.
